Asger Jorn on Cuba

One of Asger Jorn's most important works is situated in Cuba.
In 1968 Asger Jorn attended an artists' conference in Havana - as member of a French delegation.
During the conference he suggested that the painters contributed by decorating a building.Celia Sanchez - the head of the conference, and close friend to fidel Castro - put the former "Banco Hipotecario Mendoza" on the "Linea" between 10th and 12th. at his disposal.

Six huge mural paintings by Jorn and one by Saura were finished, but of the other participants, only Celia Sanchez contributed with a small mural-painting.
Fortunately the building is now used as a library (for the manuscripts of the revolution) and is air-conditioned. The murals have therefore been well preserved and are in an a fairly good condition to-day.
As the building holds material that is considered of military value, access to it is restricted, and can not be visited by tourists.

However, thanks to the Danish Consul in Havana, Mrs. Inger Arredondo, Galleri Kampmann was able to visit the building on Friday, 27th of June 1997 and take these pictures.

NOTE: The murals are presently under restauration and cannot be visited. (January 2008.)

A committée under the patronage of UNESCO World Heritage Center, Silkeborg Kunstmuseum and "Museernes Fælleskonservering" has now restored the murals, but they have not yet been inaugurated. When they have, there will be general access to visit the murals both by Cubans and tourists. (May 2009.)

The titles of the paintings have been established by the photographer Raul Corrales and the journalist Nydia Sarabia that were present at the time of execution.

The numbers refer to the ground-plan.

Painting no. 4. "Celebrating the Revolution".

Jorn: Right wall.
